Want to become a triangle & Circle Expert? 

Ever feel like Homer when it comes to triangles and angles? Well hopefully by the end of this unit you will not! 

 

The study of right angle triangles has been studied in math since 2000BC, but it was Pythagoras who actually came up with a theory to explain it. If you want to learn more about the history of Pythagoras watch this video.

 

Why is important to become a triangles expert?

  • Trigonometry plays an important part in many trades and professions such as carpentry, pipefitting, surveying, crane operating and even sewing.

  • Knowledge of how angles and distances relate helps build understanding of more complex relationships you are likely to come across in the workplace

  • The right angle triangle is important in construction and supporting structures

 

KEY TERMS- Pythagorean theorem,  hypoteneuse, leg, cosine, sine, tangent, angle of elevation, angle of depression

 

You will show your understanding by completing the Task below. FIRST complete the Building your Skills lessons to help build your understanding so you can complete the task.  You will be assessed based the Task, completion of your Math Notebook and a small Topic Test at the end. The lessons in the Build your Skills are crucial to develop the skills and knowlege that you will need to complete your task.

 

It is important to hand in your lessons so your teacher will then be able to ensure you are on the right track, if not then it can be caught quickly and the help you need can be provided.

 

 

Before you get started on Topic 5 you and your teacher need to review some skills required for you to be successful: angles, squares and square roots.

3. Once you receive your mark you are set to begin Build Your Skills to work towards completing your TASK.

Build Your Skills 5.1

In this lesson you will watch a series of tutorials showing the Pythagorean Theorem and how to calculate for a missing hypotenuse or leg of a right angle triangle.

  4. Check your answers with the teacher, or where applicable in the back of your text.

  5. Didn't understand a concept or got more than 2-3 questions incorrect?

Now that you know how find distances with angles it is time to learn what you need to do if you have the lengths but not the angles? Trigonometric Ratios are the magic that can help with that!

PART 2: Real World Trig -Create Your Own Problem

Think of or research a job that utilizes aspects of this Topic (Pythagoras and Trig. ratios).

Tell how and why it would need to use these concepts? Create a real life math problem that could be encountered. Use the exemplar to assist you.

Be sure to include:

  • a clearly labeled diagram

  • important angles or measurements needed to solve it

  • proper units

  • Seperately include a clear and accurate solution.

  • Choose a tool that properly presents your problem to others

In this lesson you will ensure you have all the necessary skills to complete the Main Topc 5 Task: The Extraordinary Race

  2. COMPLETE the Khan Academy Lesson and then show your teacher you got 3 questions correct in a row! (include in your NOTEBOOK!)

  3. Contact your teacher immediately to review your current understanding and to arrange to write your Final Test
